1^st Seal – White Horse:

This horse and its rider represent the church in the days of the apostles. It was pure and its members were full of zeal. The bow in the rider’s hand represents conquest because the gospel was swiftly carried to many nations in the time of the young church.

2^nd Seal – Red Horse:

The red horse symbolizes the time period when the early church was persecuted at the hands of the Roman empire. The red symbolizes the blood of the church.

3^rd Seal – Black Horse:

The black horse indicates a time of defeat and corrupting of faith, a time of compromise for the early church. The balances in the rider’s hand are thought to represent the legalization of Christianity in the 4^th century, when the church and state were united.

Verse six:

The wheat, barley, oil, and wine were mentioned here at extremely high prices. This represents the time when the truth of the Bible was being overshadowed by pagan customs and worship. The truth in the Bible was in very short supply.

4^th Seal – Pale Horse:

This horse represents the “ dark ages” when Satan attempted to extinguish true Christianity.

5^th Seal:

There are souls underneath the altar which are the souls of the martyrs which have sacrificed themselves for God’s cause. The fifth seal was presented to encourage people who will have to face martyrdom and death, and assures them that despite the seeming triumph of the enemy, Jesus will mete out justice at His Second Coming.

6^th Seal:

The sixth seal is an earthquake, the sun turning black and the moon becoming blood, and the stars falling from heaven. These prophecies have already been fulfilled, although some Bible scholars believe that there will be another fulfillment in the future. The earthquake was fulfilled on November 1, 1755. The sun was darkened on May 19, 1780. The moon turned to blood that night. On November 13, 1833, the stars fell from heaven.

The chapter ends with the question “ Who shall be able to stand?” This comes after the mention of all the terrible things that will happen before Christ’s return, and so the question comes naturally, because there is no indication that anyone can survive. Chapter seven explains the answer.

In verse two, an angel asks who is worthy to open the book. When the answer comes, “No man” the Greek word originally used means no being. John saw that not even the angels could open the book, and he became extremely sad and wept, because he didn’t know if the contents of the book would ever be revealed.

Then the answer came that Jesus was worthy to open the book. In the midst of the four beasts, which are speculated to be angels, He takes the book. The beasts and the elders then sing a new song. Then they are joined by countless multitudes of angels singing a song. As the chapter closes, the beasts say amen, and the twenty-four elders worship Him.

Although I have no support for my conclusion, it is my speculation that Revelation 5 is describing Christ’s ascension after His resurrection, and the twenty-four elders are people who were resurrected and taken to heaven at the same time.

The fourth angel follows the third and joins in the last part of the third angel’s message, swelling it into a loud cry.

Then I saw another mighty angel commissioned to descend to earth, and unite his voice with the third angel, and give power and force to his message…The work of this angel comes in at the right time, and joins in the last great work of the third angel’s message, as it swells into a loud cry… I saw a great light resting upon them, and they united in the message, and fearlessly proclaimed with great power the third angel’s message. {1SG 193.2}

 2. What are the two parts to the Loud Cry?

There are two parts of the Loud Cry, proclaiming the fall of Babylon, and calling God’s people to come out of her to escape her doom. This message seemed to be an addition to the third message, and joined it, as the midnight cry joined the second angel’s message in 1844.

The glory of God rested upon the patient, waiting saints, and they fearlessly gave the last solemn warning, proclaiming the fall of Babylon, and calling upon God’s people to come out of her; that they might escape her fearful doom. {1SG 194.1}

3. What are the two parts to the final warning?

The final warning consisted of two parts, one was announcing the sins of Babylon, and the other calling God’s people to come out of Babylon.

Hence the movement symbolized by the angel coming down from heaven, lightening the earth with his glory and crying mightily with a strong voice, announcing the sins of Babylon. ” In connection with his message the call is heard: “Come out of her, My people. These announcements, uniting with the third angel’s message, constitute the final warning to be given to the inhabitants of the earth. {GC 604.1}

4. What is the difference between “Babylon is fallen” in the second angel’s message of Revelation 14, as given in the summer of 1844, and “Babylon is fallen” in the Loud Cry of Revelation 18? [hint: what caused the fall of Babylon in 1844?]

When the second angel’s message was given, announcing the fall of Babylon, it was because Babylon had rejected the first angel’s message. When the Loud Cry was given, it announced that Babylon was fallen because it had rejected all three of the messages.

This message (second angel’s message) was understood by Adventists to be an announcement of the moral fall of the churches in consequence of their rejection of the first message. The proclamation, “Babylon is fallen,” was given in the summer of 1844, and as the result, about fifty thousand withdrew from these churches. {4SP 232.1}

The whole chapter shows that Babylon that has fallen is the churches who will not receive the messages of warning the Lord has given in the first, second, and third angels’ messages. {2SM 68.1}

 5. Babylon is become: “the habitation of devils,” “the hold of every foul spirit,” “and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.” Explain each of these elements.

The habitation of devils refers to our bodies which were made as a dwelling place for God that have been opened up to the evils of spiritualism. The hold of every foul spirit is talking about the way their minds have become controlled by demons. Birds are referred to in the Bible as representing people, and so the Bible is saying that the church of Babylon has become a place where people who do not love and want to serve God are found.

A belief in spiritual manifestations opens the door to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils, and thus the influence of evil angels will be felt in the churches. {GC 603.2}

The bodies of human beings, made for the dwelling place of God, had become the habitation of demons. {DA 36.3}

 6. List and explain the sins of Babylon, as stated in Revelation 18.

There are three sins listed in Revelation 18:3 that Babylon has committed. She has: made all the nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, committed fornication with the kings of the earth, and the “merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies”. First, she accepted the doctrines of the fallen apostolic churches by committing fornication with the kings of the earth. Then she gave these false doctrines to the nations by making all the nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication. Lastly, she is living the opposite of a self-sacrificing Christ-centered life by living deliciously.

7. When do Babylon’s sins reach unto heaven?

Babylon’s sins reach heaven when the National Sunday Law is put into effect.

When do her sins reach unto heaven [Rev. 18:2-5]? When the law of God is finally made void by legislation.–ST June 12, 1893. {LDE 198.5}

 …and when it shall have become a law that the transgression of the first day of the week shall be met with punishment, then their cup will be full.–7BC 910 (1886).

 8. Why does Revelation 18 say that Babylon receives the plagues?

 Because she was living deliciously and not living a life of sacrifice.

“How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow. Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.” (Revelation 18:7-8)

9. If you are honestly serving God, what difference does it make which church you belong to? [according to Revelation 18]

 Babylon is the Protestant churches of the world. Revelation 18 gives a clear picture of what will happen to Babylon because of her sins. If we do not want to be included in the people who these plagues are going to fall upon, it would be very important for us to not be a part of these churches!

10. Why are there only two distinct calls made to the churches?

God gave His people light in 1844 at the time of the Midnight Cry when people were told of the fall of Babylon. The second distinct call came at the proclamation of the Loud Cry. Why was there no call to God’s people during the years that passed in between the two cries? It is because there was nothing new happening during that time; there was a call to come out of the churches with the Midnight Cry, but there is an urgent call to come out of Babylon in the Loud Cry.

 In the last work for the warning of the world, two distinct calls are made to the churches. The second angel’s message is, “Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.” And in the loud cry of the third angel’s message a voice is heard from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.” {Mar 189.1}

11. When is the Loud Cry suppose to be given?

The Loud Cry is given after the third angel’s message is given, joining it and giving power to its message.

This message seemed to be an addition to the third message, and joined it, as the midnight cry joined the second angel’s message in 1844. {1SG 194.1} 12.

12.What is it that gives power to the Loud Voice [Cry]?

The latter rain gives power to the Loud Cry.

At that time the “latter rain,” or refreshing from the presence of the Lord, will come, to give power to the loud voice of the third angel, .–EW 86 (1854). {LDE 186.4}

 The mediation of Christ and the perpetuity of the law of God is the core content of the third angel’s message.

“Those who had accepted the light concerning the mediation of Christ and the perpetuity of the law of God, found that these were the truths brought to view in the third message.” {4SP 275.2}

2.  When did Jesus send the third angel’s message?

 The third angel’s message was given to Christ’s servants to proclaim when He entered the heavenly sanctuary to begin the work of atonement. Christ entered the Holy Place in 1844. Therefore, the third angel’s message first started to be proclaimed in 1844, and will continue to be proclaimed until Christ’s second coming.

 When Christ entered the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary to perform the closing work of the atonement, he committed to his servants the last message of mercy to be given to the world. Such is the warning of the third angel of Revelation 14. Immediately following its proclamation, the Son of man is seen by the prophet coming in glory to reap the harvest of the earth.  {4SP 273.1}

 As foretold in the Scriptures, the ministration of Christ in the most holy place began at the termination of the prophetic days in 1844. To this time apply the words of the Revelator, “The temple of God was opened in Heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament.” [REV. 11:19] The ark of God’s testament is in the second apartment of the sanctuary. As Christ entered there, to minister in the sinner’s behalf, the inner temple was opened, and the ark of God was brought to view. To those who by faith beheld the Saviour in his work of intercession, God’s majesty and power were revealed. As the train of his glory filled the temple, light from the holy of holies was shed upon his waiting people on the earth.  {4SP 273.2}

3.  How did the third angel light up the past, the present, and the future to the early advent believers after the passing of the time in 1844?

 When the third angel’s message was given, it gave light to the disappointed believers and showed them where they had been wrong. This showed them light from the past. The message also was given to them about the Sabbath, which showed them light for the present. When the final note of the message is proclaimed with great power about the wrath of God, this will give us light to guide our decisions in the future.

After Jesus opened the door of the most holy, the light of the Sabbath was seen, and the people of God were tested, as the children of Israel were tested anciently, to see if they would keep God’s law. I saw the third angel pointing upward, showing the disappointed ones the way to the holiest of the heavenly sanctuary. As they by faith enter the most holy, they find Jesus, and hope and joy spring up anew. I saw them looking back, reviewing the past, from the proclamation of the second advent of Jesus, down through their experience to the passing of the time in 1844. They see their disappointment explained, and joy and certainty again animate them. The third angel has lighted up the past, the present, and the future, and they know that God has indeed led them by His mysterious providence.  {EW 254.2}

 Men are not to be left in darkness concerning this important matter; the warning against this sin is to be given to the world before the visitation of God’s judgments, that all may know why they are to be inflicted, and have opportunity to escape them…   The warning of the third angel…   will command the attention of the world.  {GC 449.2}

4.Why does the evangelical Christian world not accept the truth of Christ’s change of ministration from the holy place to the most holy place in 1844?

 If they accept that Christ started His ministration in the most holy place in 1844, they will have to accept that it all centers around His law. This would require them to keep the Sabbath, something they have fought for a long time.

We hold no doctrine that we wish to hide. To those who have been educated to keep the first day of the week as a sacred day, the most objectionable feature of our faith is the Sabbath of the fourth commandment. But does not God’s word declare that the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God? And although it is not an easy matter to make the required change from the first to the seventh day, this change must be made. It involves a cross; it clashes with the precepts and practises of men. Learned men have taught the people till they are full of unbelief and prejudice; and yet we must say to these people, “Come and see.” God requires us to proclaim the truth, and let it discover error.  {PH089 22.1}

“As foretold in the Scriptures, the ministration of Christ in the most holy place began at the termination of the prophetic days in 1844… While God gave to Moses a copy of his law, he preserved the great original in the sanctuary above. Tracing down its holy precepts, the seekers for truth found, in the very bosom of the Decalogue, the fourth commandment, as it was first proclaimed…”{4SP 2This message was to bring more prominently before the world the uplifted Saviour, the sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. It presented justification through faith in the Surety; it invited the people to receive the righteousness of Christ, which is made manifest in obedience to all the commandments of God. Many had lost sight of Jesus. They needed to have their eyes directed to His divine person, His merits, and His changeless love for the human family. All power is given into His hands, that He may dispense rich gifts unto men, imparting the priceless gift of His own righteousness to the helpless human agent. This is the message that God commanded to be given to the world. It is the third angel’s message, which is to be proclaimed with a loud voice, and attended with the outpouring of His Spirit in a large measure. –Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 91-93. The third angel’s message showed the world that Christ was sacrificed for their sins, and it invited them to receive Christ’s righteousness.

THE IDEA IN REVELATION 14:8, 9 IS NOT SIMPLY THAT THE SECOND AND THIRD ANGELS FOLLOWED THE FIRST IN POINT OF TIME, BUT THAT THEY WENT WITH HIM. THE THREE MESSAGES ARE BUT ONE THREEFOLD MESSAGE. THEY ARE THREE ONLY IN THE ORDER OF THEIR RISE. BUT HAVING RISEN, THEY GO ON TOGETHER AND ARE INSEPARABLE.  {GC 693.1}

7.  How do the first, second, and third angels’ messages all blend into one?

The first angel rises and give his message, and then the second, and then the third. The words used in the Bible actually mean “together” or “to accompany”. The messages all compliment each other and all point to the work of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary.

THE WORD HERE RENDERED “FOLLOWED” MEANS “TO GO ALONG WITH,” “TO FOLLOW ONE,”… “GO WITH HIM.” THE IDEA INTENDED TO BE CONVEYED IS THAT OF “GOING TOGETHER,” “IN COMPANY WITH.” FORD: CLARENDON PRESS, 1940), VOL. 1, P. 52. IT ALSO MEANS “TO ACCOMPANY.” THE IDEA IN REVELATION 14:8, 9 IS NOT SIMPLY THAT THE SECOND AND THIRD ANGELS FOLLOWED THE FIRST IN POINT OF TIME, BUT THAT THEY WENT WITH HIM. THE THREE MESSAGES ARE BUT ONE THREEFOLD MESSAGE. THEY ARE THREE ONLY IN THE ORDER OF THEIR RISE. BUT HAVING RISEN, THEY GO ON TOGETHER AND ARE INSEPARABLE.  {GC 693.1}

At the end of the prophetic days in 1844, Christ entered the sanctuary to minister on the sinner’s behalf. The inner temple was opened and the ark  was shown containing the Ten Commandments. The believers were able to see that God had kept His commandments the same throughout the ages and that they were still valid for today.

While God gave to Moses a copy of his law, he preserved the great original in the sanctuary above. Tracing down its holy precepts, the seekers for truth found, in the very bosom of the decalogue, the fourth commandment, as it was first proclaimed: “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work; but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: {4SP 273.3}

The third angel closes his message thus: “Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” As he repeated these words, he pointed to the heavenly sanctuary. {EW 254.1}

10.  What is the “action step[s]” for the third angel’s message?   [In other words, How do I apply this to my own life?]

I can apply the third angel’s message to my life by daily humbling myself before God, confess my individual sins, seek pardon for my transgressions, and cooperate with Jesus in perfecting my character to enter the heavenly sanctuary. Also important is for me to keep the Sabbath.

In place of wrapping about us the garments of self-righteousness, we should be found daily humbling ourselves before God, confessing our own individual sins, seeking the pardon of our transgressions, and cooperating with Christ in the work of preparing our souls to reflect the divine image. Unless we enter the sanctuary above, and unite with Christ in working out our own salvation with fear and trembling, we shall be weighed in the balances of the sanctuary, and shall be pronounced wanting (MS 168, 1898).  {7BC 933.14}

The worshipers of God will be especially distinguished by their regard for the fourth commandment…  {9T 16.2}

11.  What are the two purposes for the warning against the beast and his image contained in the third message?

The purposes of the warning in the third message was to warn men against receiving the mark of the beast and to put the children of God on guard.

 The third angel’s message has been sent forth to the world, warning men against receiving the mark of the beast or of his image in their foreheads or in their hands. {7BC 979.12}

This message was designed to put the children of God upon their guard, by showing them the hour of temptation and anguish that was before them. {EW 254.1}

12.  What does it mean to receive the mark of the beast?

To receive this mark means to come to the same decision as the beast has done, and to advocate the same ideas, in direct opposition to the Word of God. Of all who receive this mark, God says, “The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb.” . . .  {7BC 979.12}

A mighty work was accomplished by the midnight cry. {EW 238.3}

The most talented men were not the first to receive this message. The third angel’s message will be given when His ministry ends in the heavenly sanctuary just as he cleansed the earthly sanctuary at the end of His heavenly ministry.

How is “the hour of His judgement is come,” a part of the gospel?

The First Angel’s Message proclaims that Christ is coming again and tells us that the judgement has started.

What were the consequences to the churches when they rejected the first angel’s message?

When the churches rejected the First Angel’s Message, God rejected them. The churches experienced a moral fall because they paid no heed to the message.

“when the churches spurned the counsel of God by rejecting the Advent message, the Lord rejected them…The Second Angels message was understood by Adventists to be an announcement of the moral fall of the churches in consequence of their rejection of the first message.” (4SP 232.1)

How does the First Angel’s Message affect the Second Angel’s Message?

The First Angel’s Message was a declaration of the Advent message. The churches rejected the message, and this necessitated the Second Angel with the message of the fall of Babylon.

“The first angel was followed by a second, proclaiming, ‘Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all the nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.” (4SP 232.1)

How is the First message still relevant today?

THe first Angel’s message is a proclomation of Christ’s Second Coming. This fact makes it apparent that the message is even more relevant today than ever before.

“The first message is to be repeated proclaiming the Second Advent of Christ to our world.” (16MR 40.2)

How are we supposed to respond to the first angel’s message?

 We are supposed to be filled with extreme joy and want to be talking about it both in our homes and out. We are to spread the good news as best we can.

“Dear brethren, the Lord is coming. Lift up your thoughts and heads and rejoice. Oh, we would think that those who hear the joyful news, who claim to love Jesus, would be filled with unutterable joy and full of glory. THis is the good, the joyful news which should electrify every soul, which should be repeated in our homes and told to those whom we meet on the street- what more joyful news can be communicatec?!” (2SM 381)

How does the first angel’s message, as it was perceived during the Advent movement of 1840-1844, fit together with the actual content of the first angel’s message?

The first angel’s message was misconstrued by the early Advent pioneers to mean that Christ would return in 1844. The message truly means that the work of judgement has begun.

“The announcement,’ the hour of His judgement has come,’ points to the closing work of Christ’s ministration for the salvation of men… The work of judgement which began in 1844 must continue until the cases of all are decided… hence it will extend to the close of human probation.” (GC 435.2)
